Do you have an anxiety problem?

Sometimes public transport can be a bit intimidating or stressful. You might feel nervous about travelling on a crowded vehicle or anxious about being delayed. But, if you can take control and get on board, you might find that public transport gives you the freedom and independence you’ve been looking for!

Positive Thinking

Try and plan ahead for your journey, whether its a long or short one. If travelling on public transport makes you feel anxious or nervous try and feel confident about coping with your fears.

It may take some time to feel less anxious about travelling, so set small achievable goals: you might need to take a few short journeys and build up to longer ones.

Write a list of things that help when you feel anxious, stressed or down. If you like going to the cinema, that could be a reward for making a difficult journey.

Relaxation

Learn to relax on public transport, you could read or listen to music to make you feel calm. It might help you zone out or distract you from the anxiety you might feel when travelling. You could try traveling with friends or family first, if that helps you feel calmer or more confident.

I have found when I’m feeling anxious about travelling, it really helps to concentrate on the step I’m taking at that moment only.

I don’t think about the next step, or the one I’ve just taken, just the present and that really helps.
