Tyne and Wear - new public transport scheme for people with learning difficulties

Nexus, the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Executive, is launching a new scheme to help adults with learning difficulties gain the confidence they need to use public transport.

The Partners in Travel scheme will see specially trained volunteers accompanying people with learning difficulties on buses and Metros. The volunteers, who will be unpaid, will partner these people for as long as they need assistance, and will show them how to use the public transport network.

As well as helping people with learning difficulties understand transport routes and station signage, the volunteers will show them what fares to pay and how to use ticket machines.

Director General of Nexus, Bernard Garner, said of the scheme: “The public transport network is there for all members of the community to access jobs and other facilities, and this scheme will be a big help to people who are perhaps more vulnerable than others and who feel less confident about using buses and Metros.”
